Inside Company

What Dancers and Families Can Expect

Curious what life inside Competitive Dance is really like? This page provides a closer look at the training, performances, conventions, competitions, expectations, and experiences that shape the competitive dance journey at TCDC.

More Than Competitions

When many families first hear the words Competitive Dance, they often think of trophies, judges, travel, and exciting performance opportunities.

While those experiences are certainly part of the journey, life inside Company is about much more than earning awards or stepping onto a stage.

For many dancers, Company becomes a second family. It is where friendships are formed, confidence is built, goals are achieved, and lifelong memories are created. Through advanced training, rehearsals, performances, conventions, competitions, solos, duets, trios, and group routines, dancers learn valuable lessons about commitment, teamwork, accountability, perseverance, and personal growth.

Awards and recognition are exciting parts of the experience, but many families discover that the confidence, friendships, leadership skills, and personal growth gained throughout the season become the most meaningful rewards.

At TCDC, Company is not about being the best dancer in the room. It is about becoming the best dancer, teammate, and person you are capable of becoming.

A Team Experience

One of the most rewarding parts of Company is the opportunity to be part of something bigger than yourself.

Company dancers spend countless hours training, rehearsing, traveling, performing, and celebrating accomplishments together. Through these shared experiences, dancers build trust, support one another through challenges, and develop friendships that often last for years.

Learning how to contribute to a team, support others, and work toward shared goals teaches valuable life lessons that extend far beyond dance.

For many dancers, the friendships and memories created through Company become just as meaningful as the performances themselves.

Solos, Duets, Trios & Groups

Company provides a variety of performance opportunities that allow dancers to grow both individually and as part of a team.

Not every Company dancer immediately participates in solos, duets, or trios. These opportunities are often earned through continued growth, commitment, readiness, and instructor recommendation.

Performance Opportunities

Solos
A solo gives a dancer the opportunity to showcase their individual strengths, artistry, performance quality, and personal growth. Solos require dedication, self-discipline, and a strong commitment to training and preparation.

Duets & Trios
Duets and trios teach dancers how to work closely with one another while developing trust, communication, synchronization, and teamwork. These performances often create strong partnerships and memorable experiences.

Groups
Group performances are the foundation of Company. Dancers learn how to contribute to a larger vision, support their teammates, and create something special together. Group routines teach teamwork, accountability, leadership, and the value of working toward a common goal.

She is partially undressed, wearing a gray hoodie and shorts, with makeup and earrings. In the background, there are clothing racks with jackets, dresses, and a person working on hair or makeup.

While dancers develop strong technical skills through Competitive Dance, many of the most valuable lessons extend far beyond the dance floor.

Long before dancers step onto a competition stage, they are learning how to set goals, manage their time, work as part of a team, handle constructive feedback, perform under pressure, and overcome challenges when things don't go as planned.

Competitive Dance regularly asks young people to step outside their comfort zones—whether that's performing in front of an audience, learning choreography from a guest instructor, traveling to a convention, or working toward a goal that may take months to achieve.

These experiences help develop confidence, resilience, discipline, leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills that can benefit dancers throughout school, future careers, and life.

For many former Company dancers, the greatest lessons they take with them aren't the routines they performed or the awards they earned—it's the confidence, friendships, work ethic, and life skills they developed along the way.

Did You Know?

Conventions & Competitions

One of the most exciting aspects of Company is the opportunity to participate in conventions and competitions throughout Oregon and neighboring states.

Depending on placement, performance opportunities, and level of commitment, Company dancers may attend approximately 4 to 10+ events throughout the season, giving them opportunities to perform, learn, travel, and experience the larger dance community.

Competitions give dancers the chance to perform on stage in front of professional judges, receive valuable feedback, and showcase the hard work they have put into their training throughout the season. Dancers may also have opportunities to earn awards, trophies, scholarships, special recognition, and adjudications based on their performances.

Conventions provide an entirely different experience. Dancers attend workshops and classes taught by industry professionals, learning new techniques, styles, choreography, and perspectives from instructors they may not otherwise have the opportunity to train with.

Together, conventions and competitions expose dancers to a larger dance community while helping them build confidence, strengthen performance skills, learn from feedback, and experience what it feels like to work toward a goal and step onto the stage prepared.

What Company Training Looks Like

The performances seen on stage are only a small part of the Company experience.

Throughout the season, dancers participate in additional training, rehearsals, choreography sessions, and classes designed to help them continue growing as performers. Behind every routine is a commitment to learning, refining technique, building strength, and developing confidence through consistent practice.

Depending on the styles they participate in, Company dancers may take Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Tap, Technique, or other supporting classes as part of their overall training. These classes provide the foundation needed for dancers to continue progressing both individually and as part of a team.

Company dancers are also encouraged to practice outside of class, review choreography, stretch, strengthen, and develop healthy habits that support their growth and success throughout the season.

The consistency, dedication, and effort invested throughout the year are often where the greatest growth occurs. While audiences may see the finished performance on stage, the real transformation happens during the countless hours of training, preparation, and teamwork that take place long before competition day.

As a parent, there is nothing quite like watching your dancer step onto the stage with confidence, knowing the hard work, dedication, and growth that made that moment possible.

Through solos, duets, trios, and group performances, Competition Company gives dancers opportunities to challenge themselves, build lifelong friendships, develop leadership skills, and create memories that extend far beyond dance.

Serving families throughout Redmond and Central Oregon, our Company program is designed to help dancers grow not only as performers, but as confident, capable young people both on and off the stage.

How Dancers Become Part of Company

Placement is based on more than technical ability alone. While dance skills are certainly important, instructors also look at attitude, work ethic, coachability, focus, commitment, and a willingness to learn.

We are not looking for perfect dancers.

We are looking for dancers who are excited to grow, embrace challenges, and take advantage of the opportunities that Company provides.

Every dancer's journey is unique, and placement decisions are made with the goal of helping each dancer succeed and continue progressing.

Our instructors carefully consider where each dancer will have the greatest opportunity to learn, build confidence, and thrive. The goal of evaluations is not to compare dancers against one another, but to help place them in an environment where they can be challenged, supported, and set up for long-term success.

Company is not about proving you are already great. It is about showing that you are ready to learn, ready to grow, and ready to take the next step in your dance journey.

Is Company Right For Your Dancer?

Company is a great fit for dancers who:

✓ Love performing

✓ Enjoy being part of a team

✓ Want additional training opportunities

✓ Are willing to work toward long-term goals

✓ Thrive in a supportive and encouraging environment

✓ Are interested in conventions and competitions

Company is not about being the most talented dancer. It is about having the desire to learn, grow, work hard, and make the most of every opportunity.

Is Your Dancer Ready for Company?

Every dancer's journey is different, and there is no single path into Company.

Some dancers are ready to pursue additional opportunities early on, while others benefit from spending more time developing their skills and confidence through recreational classes. Both paths are valuable, and our goal is always to help each dancer grow at the pace that is right for them.

If your dancer has a passion for dance, enjoys performing, loves being part of a team, and is looking for additional opportunities to learn and grow, Company may be the next step in their dance journey.
